We Own The Sky

This track by M83 was my anthem last Spring.  I have yet to find a replacement. It still makes me feel like Spring is finally here!

Little Sister

New track by Crystal Antlers - Little Sister.  I really love this band.  This is a much more mellow track than anything that has been released by them before now.  It still has the signature shambled and fuzzy sound that they do so well, but there is a bit more maturity coming through on this track.

Celine Fall 2010

This is the third collection that Phoebe Philo has done for Celine since her return to the fashion world(don't forget, Resort is very important nowadays!).  She was previously as Chloe and was really the driving force behind the Chloe reinvention.  She got pregnant and decided to take some time off, so she was pretty much wiped off the face of the earth for over two years.  She has come back refreshed and it shows in these collections.  Her Spring collection was such a huge departure from what was happening in fashion at that moment that it felt like a shock to your system.  Throughout the runway season, you become very accustomed to a set of trends and ideas and once you are down to the final set of shows, you come in with a set of expectations.  Phoebe didn't follow any of those.  The direction of the collection was clean, minimal, a bit futuristic, and oh so modern.

For Fall 2010, Phoebe followed in the same vocabulary she created for Celine in her Spring collection.  The collection is very minimal and clean.  The updates came through layering, the addition of very strong knits and sweaters, and the outerwear.  The outerwear in the collection is going to have girls all over the world drooling!  Overall, another strong showing from a girl that has come back to become one of the darlings of the fashion world.

Telephone

The highly anticipated video for "Telephone" came out last week.  I was not disappointed.  Many of my friends were not as enthusiastic as I am about the video, but any reference to Coke can curlers, Kill Bill, and Axl Rose will get me giddy as a school girl.  If anything else, Gaga should be applauded for bringing energy back to the music video world.  Don't you guys remember the TRL/Making the Video days when we were all so excited to see music videos?  It's been a while since that type of hype has been around.  I hope that Gaga can continue to bring this energy back to this almost forgotten world.

I Feel Better

New music video time!  This is the video for Hot Chip's latest single, "I Feel Better", off of One Life Stand.  I LOVE THIS VIDEO!  It's starts off as a parody of a 90's boy band video, but then takes a really unexpected turn.  Just watch it, you'll enjoy it, promise!

Olympians by Riccardo Tisci

Riccardo Tisci decided to show his Olympic spirit in his latest collection for Givenchy.  The overall collection emphasized protective outerwear and very strong knitwear pieces, which have been a major trend this season, but did them with the gothic touch that we've come to expect from Givenchy.  I do have to say that the romanticism and gothic influence were toned down this season, which was refreshing!  I know, shocker!  Riccardo experimented with a fold over idea, which was present in the skirts and pants, but also appeared as an asymmetrical detail in the velvet evening dresses near the end of the collection.  The shot of bright color was also unexpected, but very refreshing for the collection.  The graphic fairisle knit pieces were amazing.  They actually reminded me of the global school girl collection that Balenciaga did in Fall 2007.  Regardless, I thought this was another strong collection for Givenchy.  Those girls will still find something they need to add to their closets for the fall season!

The Original

Gabriel Orozco drew this amazing pattern over a human skull.  This piece is named "Black Kites" and was created in 1997, way before Damien Hirst created the diamond encrusted skull that is so well known today.

O.N.E.

I really hope this is what the future is really like.  Yeasayer's newly released video for their single, "O.N.E."  Pretty amazing!  Out there, but amazing none the less!

The Church of YSL

So, I've had a love/hate relationship with Stefano over the past couple of years.  There are moments of complete brilliance, where he fuses the heritage of the brand with a new idea and comes up with something unexpected, but there are also stumbling blocks along the way where he loses his rhythm.  Thankfully, Stefano got out of the right side of the bed when thinking up this collection!  It was YSL to the core.  Parisian chic was oozing off the runway.  The essence of what YSL stands for as a brand was palpable, yet the looks were moved forward through a slight exaggeration of the silhouettes and shapes.  There was a restraint that ran through the entire collection, but there was also a subdued sexuality that was present - something that Miss Miuccia does oh so well - that feeling that what turns you on the most is that which you cannot see.  Being the good Catholic boy that I am, I also saw plenty of references to the habits worn by nuns throughout the collection.  The use of plastic was also pretty witty!  I had a smile from ear to ear while watching this video!  Bravo Stefano!

The fact that LCD Soundsystem was playing live didn't hurt either!

Oh - and I absolutely need to have one of those necklaces and clutches for Fall!

Dragon's Lair

The new video for "Dragon's Lair" - on Sunset Rubdown's album, Dragonslayer.  This album was definitely one of my favorites of 2009.  I was fortunate enough to see Sunset Rubdown twice in 2009 and they do not dissapoint!

Rocket

New Goldfrapp!  She's back to her old self again, and it makes me happy!

Dries Van Noten Fall 2010/2011

I don't remember if I've ever posted anything about Dries and his collections in the past.  If I haven't, it's a testament to his ability to be understated while being a driving force in fashion today.   He's one of the Antwerp Six and has been creating collections under his namesake brand for almost 25 years now.  For fall 2010, Dries decided to pair his wonderful worldy take on fashion with the military.  The outcome was dreamy.  The jackets were all nipped in the waist, while creating a peplum effect that accentuated the hips.  The trousers had an ease to them, which is refreshing to see in a world littered with tights.  Dries always does a wonderful job with exotic embellishment and creating the illusion of print with this technique, but there was also an unexpected shot of printed fabrics this season.  My absolute favorite looks in the collection were the sweatshirts paired with the chiffon skirts that appeared several times throughout.  There was definitely an fusion of Old World elegance with New World ease that made this collection special.  It was another knockout for Dries!

Is This The End of the World?

The Apocalypse wasn't the inspiration that Nicolas Ghesquiere called out for his latest collection for Balenciaga, but there was an Apocalyptic quality to the clothes.  A protective element came through in most of the clothes, whether it was through quilting or the fact that most of the fabrics looked as if they had a foam backing to them.  They stood off the body in a rather strange way and it was more exaggerated than what you see with neoprene.  Some of the pieces looked like a reinvention of what we saw last season, while other pieces looked like they were pieced together with found objects.   This collection had a polarizing effect on most critics, but I thought it was a very interesting and refreshing take on the Balenciaga woman.  The collection was looking forward in an unexpected way, while maintaining the identity that has been created for Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere.  Yes, it's not a commercial smash hit, but the Balenciaga girl will still find something she has to have in this collection.
